Ethanol levels in the petrol available from the pump have been increased this year and the negative effects on garden machinery are beginning to show themselves.

What is E10?

E10 is a fuel made up of 90% regular petrol and 10% ethanol. This grade of fuel was introduced as the standard grade available at the UK filling stations earlier in 2021. This change has not resulted in issues for the majority of road vehicles manufactured from 2011 onwards.

Ethanol naturally attracts water molecules present in the atmosphere and within the fuel tank itself, forming a highly corrosive mixture.

How will it affect my machinery?

In small engine machinery which uses a carburettor, ethanol can damage the integrity of plastic and rubber, resulting in parts failing, higher running temperatures, and poor reliability.

A rise in fuel related issues in garden machinery, especially in machinery used infrequently has been caused by the increased ethanol content.

What we recommend

We recommend using Aspen fuels in place of pump petrol. Aspen Alkylate Petrol contains no ethanol, meaning it can be stored for a long time without any deterioration in quality, which makes your engine easy to start even after long standstill periods.  Aspen is virtually free from harmful substances such as benzene, aromatic hydrocarbons or olefins; substances that can cause serious health problems.
